PREFIRE
Names for the PREFIRE Launches!

MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this natural-color image of western Alaska on January 15, 2015. Snow covers most of the land and mountains, and sea ice fills the northern Bering Sea. Current instruments like MODIS are not able to see the far-infrared light this landscape emits, but the PREFIRE-TIRS instrument can. Credit: NASA/Jeff Schmaltz

The first PREFIRE CubeSat launch has been dubbed Ready, Aim, PREFIRE by Rocket Lab, and will occur no earlier than May 22, 2024. Its sibling will then be lofted into space during the PREFIRE and Ice launch, within 3 weeks of the first. For more details, see the announcements by NASA (https://blogs.nasa.gov/smallsatellites/2024/04/29/launch-date-set-for-nasas-prefire-mission-to-study-polar-energy-loss/) and Rocket Lab (https://www.rocketlabusa.com/updates/rocket-lab-prepares-back-to-back-launches-for-climate-change-research-mission-for-nasa/).
